The game comes with various scenarios that give you different limitations to achieve various goals with for example, there’s a Romeo & Juliet-esque scenario where you control two lovers who both need to survive in order for you to win. You play the game for a certain number of rounds, at the end of which you need to have accomplished a certain goal – most often surviving with any or all survivors in a not completely inhuman state. You need to make sure your people stay well fed and well hydrated while in the meantime clearing out rubble, opening locked doors, building barricades and other inventions – while not getting sick, depressed, tired or injured while doing so. In this game you are in control of a group of survivors who have taken residence in an abandoned mansion. In this case, just a few minutes into playing the video game, I kept thinking to myself ‘I wish I was playing the board game!’. The rule of thumb for board game adaptations of other media is usually that the original is better. Note about the video game: I did recently play it for the first time. This game won’t often make you feel good, and oftentimes instead leave you morally exhausted as you have been fighting off hunger, diseases and misery while making choices that appeal to your humanity. This War of Mine is a war story unlike others a refreshing premise in a depressing package. Teachers, TV show hosts, cooks… they are all forced to adapt (choose between bad or worse) or die. You’re not a soldier – at least, you didn’t use to be – but now everyone kinda is. Lives end on a daily basis, every street corner potentially a future grave, every nightly venture possibly your last. The city of Pogoren is at war, countless daily lives torn asunder just as much as buildings are.
